First of all, fretless basses have there own very unique sound. The most common fretless sound is often described as a "mwah" sound. This sound, heard in such places as the introduction to Pink Floyd's "Hey You," is very distinctive of a fretless bass, but is by no means the only sound it can produce. Players like Sting have used fretless basses successfully in a rock context, as well. Jaco Pastorious revolutionized the bass playing world with his brilliant work on a fretless bass with Weather Report. Pino Palladino has proven himself as a huge go to session guy, with much of his work being done on a fretless bass.

So, you understand that fretless basses sound different, but is that the only reason to play one? As it turns out, the fretless bass is actually capable being a very expressive instrument in the right hands, often more so than a fretted bass. Because you have no frets, you can provide a very precise control over the tone, pitch, and timber of each note. You can perform silky smooth legato slides, violin like vibrato, and many other unique expressive techniques that would not be possible on a fretted instrument.

Many would be fretless players worry about intonation. And its true, playing in tune does take a lot of practice. However, if you're diligent, its not impossible to learn by any means. It will take you some time, but unless you have severe pitch perception problems or coordination issues, you should be able to learn how to play the fretless bass in tune, given time and practice. Try not to let this be too big of a road block in your decision to play fretless bass.

Rickenbackers have always been a little different. Nowhere is this quite as apparent as with their distinct "Rick sound." With more of a mid rangy cutting sound than Fenders, combined with a rock solid low end, Rickenbacker's were widely adopted by rock musicians, leading to the slogan "Nothing Rocks Like a Rick." The 4000 series, which has made up almost the entirety of the Rickenbacker bass line began production in 1964. Using a unique neck through body design and innovative electronics, musicians soon caught on to these amazing basses.

Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, and Roger Waters were all early adopters of Rickenbacker basses. Because of their unique sound, their popularity only grew. Rickenbacker basses were being used by many hard rock groups of the 1970s. These bands who appreciated the Rick's solid low end sustain combined with cutting highs and mids. The Rick had found a niche.

Rickenbacker continued to produce new models as time went on. The 4000 series had many variations, such as the 4001, 4003, and 4004 models are still huge popular today. Special models such as the eight string 4008 and the hollow-body 4005 are also worthy additions to the line. These 4000 series bass are still being produced by Rickenbacker.

Today, you can still buy Rickenbacker basses. Even the new models still keep that classic sound intact, while providing legendary playability. Though they aren't cheap, by buying from Bass Gear Online, you can still get a great deal on one of the coolest instruments ever created.

When I was shopping for a bass to start learning on, I was pretty sure I wanted a Fender style bass, but I wasn't sure if I wanted a Jazz or a Precision bass. I eventually decided on a Precision style bass (or "P-bass"), because of their super solid, dummy proof tone, and simplicity. I tend to tinker with things a little more than I should, so if I had a Jazz bass, I'd probably spend to much time messing with the knobs, and not enough time actually practicing!

I decided on the 3 Tone Sunburst model with the maple neck. After ordering the bass online, it arrived within a few days. Opening up and looking at it, I could see no obvious flaws in the finish are assembly. The whole thing felt quite solid, like something that should cost way more than $110. My only complaint is that the finish on the neck is a little more yellow-y than I would like, but it still looks cool overall.

I plugged it into my Acoustic B20 practice amp, and start playing. The bass felt super solid, and sounded good to my ears through my amp. The action was a little to low, though (almost impossible to play some fret without severe buzzing), so I took the bass to get setup professionally by a local luthier. They did a great job, though they informed my that my pickup was slightly "microphonic," but this has yet to bother me.

Playing the bass with the new strings and setup, I was really impressed by the feel. Really solid, easy to play, and its sounds great playing along with recordings so far, especially classic P-bass songs (The Police, The Clash, and more). I'm sure this bass will last me for many years, even though I may upgrade in the future.

Overall, I highly recommend the SX P-bass to anyone trying to find a good, solid, beginners bass guitar. At this price, you really can't go wrong at all.
